About La Jolla
La Jolla, California, is located just 14 miles north of downtown San Diego and encompasses an approximately seven mile long strip of sandy beaches and rocky cliffs hugging the Pacific coastline. La Jolla is an oceanside resort community, located on hills and bluffs overlooking the sparkling Pacific Ocean. Even though La Jolla is in close proximity to San Diego, it has been able to retain a small town feel. It is one of California's most beautiful seaside towns, and features some of the state's most gorgeous beaches. La Jolla enjoys mild weather year-round, characterized by highs in the 70s and lows in the 60s with little moisture.
La Jolla's history dates back to approximately 10,000 years ago, when Native Americans settled along the Oceanside. Historians are conflicted whether the name La Jolla comes from the term la joya, which is Spanish for "the jewel" or whether it came from the Native American word woholle, which translates to "hole in the mountains." La Jolla was incorporated in 1850 as part of San Diego. Between 1900 and 1920, La Jolla became a prime tourist destination, which still holds true today.
La Jolla enjoys a wide variety of activities to suit anyone visiting this beachside haven. La Jolla attracts kayakers, divers, and boaters, as well as surfers and bicyclists who come to enjoy this recreational paradise. La Jolla has become a foodie destination due to the growing number of eateries. Families enjoy visiting La Jolla because of its small town feel and the number of kid-friendly activities available.
